A few months ago I moved into a basement suite with my room mate. Everything seemed fine at first but we quickly learned that our landlord wasn`t reliable. When we moved in the place wasn`t ready, it was dirty, the fridge was leaking, the washer/dryer wasn`t there, and the furnace needed to be repaired. It took about a month to get everything worked out. We then asked for a rent reduction due to the fact that nothing was ready. The landlord said no. So we left it. Before we were moved in I asked the landlord repeatedly for a tenancy agreement/damage inspection which still hasn`t happened (4 months later). Now my landlord has died and there are new property managers. They are even harder to get ahold of. The new landlord won`t answer or return my calls. They will only text and sometimes won`t respond till the next day. At one point our gas was turned off and didn`t have hot water for about 4 days. The top suite now is empty and the new landlord is trying to rent it out. When I saw the ad posted on Craigslist it stated that the whole house was for rent. But our new landlord hasn`t told us anything. About a week ago a lady came to our door asking about the suite upstairs. We told her we didn`t know anything. But let her take a look inside to see the floor plan of our suite. A week later the same lady came back and asked if the landlord has told us anything about the suite. We told her no. But she came to warn us about the landlord. She said that they were trying to rent out the house ASAP. Her being one of the front runners for the house. A few months ago my roommate and I got into a loud verbal fight and the old tenets upstairs (who would get into drunk fights and call the police on themselves) called the police. Everything was resolved and our old landlord before he died came to do an inspection and said that everything was alright and to not let it happen again which it hasn`t. The lady that came to ask about the top suite told us that we might need to get a lawyer because they might try to kick us out without notice. She said that the new landlord told her about the domestic dispute and may use it as leverage to have us kicked out. She told us that we might need to get a lawyer and sue. The lady also told us that we should be really nice to the landlord and offer to clean up yard, and to send a condolence to the family on there loss so they are indebted. If we wanted to stay there. I got a text today from the landlord telling me that there is going to be a city inspection of the suite next week. But the night before they need to take out the stove and change the middle door locks to pass inspection. What? They also said that we were not allowed to be there while it happened. Which makes me extremely uncomfortable. Btw, we are month-to-month lease. So here`s my questions: - Can my landlord leverage the domestic dispute to kick us out when ever they please? - Can my landlord make me leave for a city inspection? and is this normal? - Why does the landlord need to take out my stove? Should I let them? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I have a lot of anxiety over this situation. | ||
